Other teams in contention in D1 were New Albany and Ursuline Academy. In D2, Worthington Christian, Laurel, and Chaminade-Julienne had notable seasons. Western Reserve Academy also deserves recognition, but they are not in the OHSAA or State Team Tournament.
The Rosetta Stone teams were Sycamore, Massillon Jackson, and Magnificat because of their extensive travel schedules.

The Top Ten Girls Teams Report and OTZ Matrix report were used to create these rankings. Some teams have likely played more matches than what is online. Prior scores can be entered at any time.
OTZ will be ending the daily updates after tomorrow. There will still be a few more updates in November. Still to go are an OTZ Photo Edition, OTZ Usage Report, OTZ All-Ohio players, and additions to the Top Players and Watch Lists. This is the 75th-straight daily update.

Buy an OTZ Photo [Now] - 10% Off State / State Team Photos
The photos taken during the season are now posted on SmugMug for fans to view. And for a limited time only (until Halloween - 10/31), photos taken at States and the State Team Tournament are 10% off of the regular price.

Why buy OTZ images? Many of these photos will also be included in your daughter's OTZ Player Profile. This casts your daughter in the best possible light for college coaches. It also virtually guarantees that your daughter will be considered to be the *best* granddaughter or niece. These digital images can be shared with others electronically. And hopefully, these are the best action tennis photos available. It also helps fund the OTZ service, which you use.
Can they be used on TennisRecruiting.net, UTR, etc.? Yes.
Why not allow buyers to simply download the images from SmugMug? I do not want just anyone buying a photo of *your* daughter. This was the case *before* AI was prevalent and it is now even a bigger issue. Plus, most of these images are in an unfinished form. Most need to be cropped, color-corrected, sharpened, etc.
What are the prices? Click on Buy a Tennis Photo for all of the prices. There are quantity discounts that take the price all of the way down to $12 an image. For the price of a couple of Happy Meals, you can have a wonderful memory of your daughter playing her favorite high school sport. As for the trade-offs, your non-tennis-playing children are not going to starve if they miss a meal or two..
Why the discount on already low prices? More photos need to be purchased to justify OTZ going to matches. Also, SmugMug is not inexpensive so I need parents to buy photos to help justify using this service.
What's the process in buying photos?
1) Click on the SmugMug link.
2) Click on the matches or tournaments in which your daughter played. They are in reverse chronological order.
3) Scroll through these images to find your daughter's photos. I think it is easier using a desktop or iPad to do this.
4) Email or Feedback the image names that you want by supplying the File Name (i.e. DSC_1234) to OTZ. The File Name is located in the lower left-hand corner. Note that the photos that have been processed include the player's name.
5) Do this now or before 10/31 to get the 10% off on States and State Team photos. If there is a time constraint, please also provide this information. Otherwise, photos will be emailed to you in early November.
There can be numerous photos from which to choose, especially for players who requested that I take an image of their daughter. If you want OTZ to pick out the best three, five, ten, etc. images for you, I can do that.
Almost forgot.. Since memories can get fuzzy, the date on which the photo was taken will be included in the lower right hand corner. That will become especially useful when your daughter is a mother (or a grandmother).

OHSAA Tournament Championship Points
The Lindner Family Tennis Center is great, but not for capturing championship points. Four out of four of the championship points were captured this year, but not all by OTZ. Thankfully, two of the videos were taken by others.
Special thanks go to Northern Kentucky University's Coach Brian Nester for taking the D1 Doubles video. Not only did I arrive *during* the championship point, but I also got in the way of Coach Nester's video. I was held up at Division 2 doubles, which ended up going to three sets. I do not know who to thank for the D1 Singles video, but I received it from Coach Richard Hunt. (Update 10/21: Coach Hunt received the State Singles Championship point video from Thai Sribanditmongkol. Thank you!)
Player photos are included at the end of the videos. There was also an extra point added when possible.
For best results, use full screen mode and increase the resolution to HD (for high definition).
Crank up the volume so that co-workers (or neighbors) stop by your office cube to see what is going on.

There are always some scoring snafus found by coaches as they begin to print off their end-of-season reports. If results are incorrect, please provide:
- the *incorrect* match information. The error first needs to be located in the database and there are a zillion scores. Please include the date, the name(s) of all of the player(s) and their schools, and the score.
- then provide the correct match information which includes all of the above, but with the correct information
If the commentary is incorrect, please provide *when* the commentary was in error, the erroneous comments, and what it should be. Screen shots are always helpful.
Please keep in mind there are quite a few moving parts. The players could have reported the wrong score, the coach could have recorded it incorrectly, the newspaper may have posted it incorrectly, or maybe, just possibly, OTZ could have made an error.

Mason and Orange are the State Team Championships
Congratulations to Mason, the Division I team champion, and to the Division II champion, Orange. Mason defeated Upper Arlington and Magnificat to get the championship. Orange beat Maumee Valley Country Day and Columbus Academy. In the 3rd / 4th match-ups, Upper Arlington defeated Perrysburg for third and Indian Hill beat Maumee Valley Country Day to get third place in D2.
In this photo, Mason not only illustrates how many consecutive championships they have won, but also why they have such high ACT Math scores. Mason has just one more year before they need to get creative in their consecutive champion photo.. Both Mason and Orange won both the boys and the girls championship for 2025. On the excitement meter, this State Team Tournament was rated "very good". The location at the Lindner Family Tennis Center was absolutely amazing. If you think about it, this is the best location in the world to have a high school championship. Again, special thanks for the generous donations to help make this happen. Despite the occasional threats of rain, the weather was awesome. The competition level in Division I was as expected but Division II was very good. Having Orange, Magnificat, and Perrysburg back in the mix was also nice.
Most of the singles matches involving the top players went unfinished. The exceptions were: Orange's Genevieve Hayden defeated Maumee Valley Country Day's MariYona Shannon and Columbus Academy's Gabrielle Stewart; Indian Hill's Sophia Thompson beat Columbus Academy's Gabrielle Stewart and Maumee Valley Country Day's MariYona Shannon; Mason's Addison Cassidy defeated Upper Arlington's Alexa Roth and Magnificat's Elizabeth Ammori; Mason's Emma Wagner beat Upper Arlington's Kylie Husted; Upper Arlington's Alexa Roth defeated Perrysburg's Cambell Looser; Mason's Adriana Moreno beat Upper Arlington's Carmen Kimmel; and Perrysburg's Penelope Giammarco defeated Magnificat's Elizabeth Ammori. Orange won the prestigious, "Holding the Banner the Levelist" award. Orange was off by 1.1% and Mason was off-kilter by 1.7%.
As for next year, Mason will actually be pretty good yet again, but they lose a successful group of state champion seniors, including Addison Cassidy, Pratyusha Chaudhuri, and Adriana Moreno. Orange loses only one key player, Lily Guiler, to graduation so look for them to be in the hunt again.
The OTZ brain is foggy after driving back and forth from Columbus to Mason for the last three days, but I will be hitting things hard this afternoon. (Argh. The OTZ wife just reminded me that we got tickets for the Harry Potter Broadway show.) After 72 consecutive updates, OTZ is ready for the end of the season. The plan is to rush through a series of updates. The championship points video edition will be tomorrow.

Congratulations to the State Champions
Congratulations to all of the players who competed yesterday and especially to the State Champions. The competition was outstanding with four of the main draw matches going to three sets. Play wrapped up at 3pm, which was an hour earlier than the previous two years.

In the District versus District competition, the Northeast District had two champions. The Southwest and Central Districts both had one.
The State Team Tournament has been switched from Mason Middle School / High School to the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The cost of renting the LFTC was too expensive for the State Team Tournament organizers, but a generous tennis benefactor came forward and helped make it happen. He wanted all of the State Team players to have the experience of the playing at the LFTC.
Other than mangling some of the names, the OTZ Top Picks for States video came out pretty solid. Watch for this paragraph to be weirdly omitted after future state tournaments when the picks are mangled as badly as the names.
Tomorrow's update will be videos of the championship points. Videos were obtained for just the D2 Singles and Doubles. I think that I have some parents and friends who are willing to share their videos of the other two championships. The downside of the LFTC is that it is difficult to watch the completion of all of the finals.

Everything was absolutely great yesterday. The Lindner Family Tennis Center was a big "wow" for everyone. There were some great semi-final matches that were held yesterday.. Weather conditions could not have been more perfect. The competition wrapped up at approximately 4:00pm.

The OHSAA has done a nice job with their Fan Guide. It is worthwhile to check it out prior to going.
Again, the weather looks good for today, but showers might arrive before the State Team Tournament is completed at Mason. If that is the case, Queen City is the rain-out location.

OTZ "Top Picks for States" Video
It is time for another OhioTennisZone video. This video recognizes the players who are OTZ's top picks for States. The video uses a combination of OTZ action photos and videos that were taken over the last two years. Hope you find it to be interesting and informative. This will also help match a name with a face for those who attend States.

Time frames are always super tight in creating these videos. The plan was to start this video on Sunday, but the GoDaddy problems meant that it was started yesterday. I doubt that I ever will, but I would like to get to a 95% ok video level. That cannot be done in "one take", but that is all that I had time for this season. This one is probably about 85-90% of what I would like for it to be. It is really hard to become proficient in something that is done just twice a year, but I will keep trying. I did create my own teleprompter to make the task easier by using a music stand, a picture frame, and strategically placed gaffer's tape. Thankfully, we do not live in an earthquake zone..

Google will likely include advertisements with this and other OTZ videos. I do not have any control over who advertises, nor does OTZ benefit financially from these advertisers. Thankfully, we are not in an election season where fans think that I am promoting one candidate over another. .
Please let me know if there are any inaccuracies - there always are and you always do. I do not purposely try to say names incorrectly. Really. I don't. I should establish some sort of prize for the player with the most mangled name. For consideration, please enter a Feedback. Note that this will be Hawken's Valeria Kislyansky's third year at States. I mangled it and then misstated this during the video. Sophia Thompson is also now going to play for Cornell.
It is fun to review older videos. Here are a few from both prior girls and boys seasons. Click for Girls 2020, Boys 2021, Girls 2021, Boys 2022, Girls 2022, Boys 2023, Girls 2023, Boys 2024, Girls 2024, and Boys 2025. Hopefully you will agree that the production quality has improved at least slightly over the years. At one point, I created "hype" videos for States that included action photos of the players in the State Tournament and the State Team Tournament, but Google eventually prevented professional music from being used. That eliminated my interest. Perhaps with AI generated music, this will be possible again in the future. Here is one from Girls 2019. Tennis fans will recognize a few of these high school players.

GoDaddy Problems | OTZ State Draws Are Online
Web site access appears to be fully restored (as of 4:25pm). The GoDaddy problems last week went from "not good" to horrible on Sunday..
The site continued to have problems with some iPads last week after GoDaddy attempted to fix problems during the previous week. These iPads could not access OTZ. To avoid additional potential issues associated with higher usage activity, I waited until yesterday (Sunday) to contact GoDaddy. I spent another $1,000 on additional services (a firewall) and a higher level of customer support. After those changes, OTZ was largely available to view but I could not change any software programs (i.e. for today's daily update) nor would the internal databases interact fluidly with the software. This means that neither coaches nor I could login and access the various reports. I do not have a good understanding of what needed to be done to correct these problems so it was very frustrating. Some sites are very static (i.e. dentist office) and that makes the firewall implementation rather easy. Obviously OTZ is anything but static, and I do not think GoDaddy had a good understanding of what the issues were. They also did not consult with me on potential problems.

Much of the work on the OTZ-Enhanced State Draws was done yesterday, but the system problems prevented me from making the draws "live". More player photos will be added soon.
The state draws are disappointing. This will continue to be the case until the best 3-4 players (or teams) in each draw can be somewhat protected by making sure that they are in separate quarters. Until this is done, the state's best players will not even have a chance to get to the semi-finals on Friday. The biggest issue this season is having Berlin's Soleil Cordell and Oak Hill's Renee Harper in the same quarter in D1 Singles. To make matters worse, Mason's Addison Cassidy is in the same half. Another problem is having Mason's Emma Wagner - Pratyusha Chaudhuri in the same quarter in D1 dubs as Anthony Wayne's Mara Boyd and Cora Langenderfer. I thought that they might meet in the finals. Is UTR needed for all of the players to help create better draws? No. OTZ, UTR, WTN, etc. can all be used together as tools to identify the best high school players. High school performance should; however, be the main factor. Identifying the best doubles teams will always be more of a challenge than singles.

The Southwest Results have not yet been posted so this update cannot be completed. It is also unclear if there were snags that prevented their Districts from being finished. There are also a couple results from the NW that were not posted. (I am off to play an 8am platform tennis match. If there are more results posted later, this update will be updated..)

Northeast and Northwest Districts
Yesterday's play provided more tennis and more state qualifiers. The Northeast District played their D2 Districts yesterday, and most of their state qualifiers were identified. The Northwest has their D2 players set, but the D1 qualifiers will be determined today. The Districts' seeding rounds will take place throughout the state today. While many (many) players were happy to get to States, today's play is extremely important for those who want to *win* States.

State Qualifiers Set for Soutwest District
Conditions were perfect at the Southwest District Tournament yesterday. This was the first District tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center (LFTC) since all of the major construction was done, and it worked out great. Fans may remember that when States was last at LFTC, it was rather sterile. Yesterday was different. The brightly colored chairs and tables were still there from the Cincinnati Open. The new shelter was great. Music was piped in. It was super clean. There were two additional restrooms that were available. As for the monogrammed towels? Well done, LFTC. Since the Southwest runs their D1 and D2 tournaments at the same time, there were the same number of competitors as there will be at States. Expect a 5pm-ish completion time for the first day.
The Southwest District State Qualifiers are listed below. As almost always, there were some disappointing draws which caused some of the best players in the Southwest District to be excluded. Also listed are the D1 Doubles State Qualfiiers for the Northeast.

Central Districts | Orange Beats Hawken for Final Four
The weather was so perfect yesterday at the Central D1 District tournament that the athletic directors were out in force. It was nice to see them, and they got to enjoy some great tennis. Central has a solid group of State Qualifiers. They are listed below.

After spending at least another hour on the telephone with GoDaddy last night, the SSL issues will hopefully be resolved today. OhioTennisZone works fine on desktops and cellphones, but there are still connection issues with iPads. It may be hard to believe but this was not an OhioTennisZone miscue. Really. GoDaddy is obviously having issues. There is never a good time to have system problems, but this one could have happened in November..

OTZ College Report
The OhioTennisZone.com College Report is now available. This report lists the Ohio high school tennis players who are competing in college. It is not all-inclusive. If a player was a OTZ-paying member (or playing under a Team Membership), he/she absolutely should be included in this report. If not, she will likely not be included. (Some are included at the bottom of the report.) This is a very time consuming report to create for a number of reasons. They include: kids stop playing college tennis, players switch teams, URL's for teams change, etc.

There are 116 college players and 5 recruits in the report. There are 51 men and 70 women competing.
The breakdown by class are: Freshman - 29, Sophomore - 41, Junior - 22, Senior - 23, and Red Shirt Senior - 1. There are also five recruits listed, and that number will, of course, grow.
Sources for this information include the players themselves (and/or their parents) and TennisRecruiting.net.
While it is time consuming to create it, it is also time consuming for OTZ users to fully use, but it is still worthwhile. The links are the best part of this report. Player appearance can change quite a bit from high school tennis to college so that is fun to see, and it is interesting to see the college majors the players have chosen. As many would expect, the goals of these players are high. Note that these players are also listed on each OTZ Team Report.
It is also worthwhile to see how many players are on a college team. If there are 20+ players, would your son/daughter get to play? Finances are tight at many D3 colleges, and I suspect that some teams are encouraged to recruit players simply to pay tuition dollars.

Another consideration.. U.S. D1 college tennis has morphed into benefiting non-U.S. kids more than U.S. kids. Is your U.S. son/daughter on a team to play, or to be the designated "U.S. player" on a foreign team? This is a growing problem for D3 programs as well.
While there are negatives, there are absolutely many, many benefits to playing college tennis. The coach is going to keep his/her players on task on the court and in the classroom. I doubt that there is a better peer group of friends on campus. Players can improve their tennis games and stay fit. Our son played college tennis and it worked out great for him. While he does not play much tennis anymore, I greatly appreciate his platform tennis skills when he is my partner..
It has always been a bit weird. to me, because I will have parents who have never been OTZ supporters, reach out to me and request that their son or daughter be included in this report. The time to support OTZ is while your player is in high school.
Today's matches include: Massillon Jackson (H) versus Western Reserve Academy; Upper Arlington (H) versus New Albany; and Columbus School for Girls (H) versus Columbus Academy.
This will be a busy week. OTZ plans are to be at the Central District tournament on Wednesday and the Southwest District Tournament on Thursday. Friday will be a Findlay work day. On Saturday, I return for the Central District Seeding round. Even though I was at the Cincinnati Open, this will be the first opportunity to check out how the Lindner Family Tennis Center will be used for high school tennis post changes.

Sectional Seeding Rounds Done | Awaiting District Draws
The state finished the Sectional Seeding Rounds yesterday. Now everyone is awaiting the District Draws. As mentioned yesterday, it takes a bit of luck to get to States for most players. The District Draws is the place where this saying really kicks into gear. Some Sectionals are weaker than others in singles or doubles or both. Playing against a "one seed" from a weak Sectional is what players want. Expect to see some of the District draws today.
The Central District Sectional Seeding Round results are now on OTZ. This information is also available via the links above. I am going to go ahead and enter the Seeding Round results for the other Districts as well after all of the results for a District is posted. Currently, just the Central and Northeast results are posted.

Shady Side-PA Beats Western Reserve Academy
Best of luck during the Sectional Seeding rounds today. The weather will be perfect. Many players have the goal of reaching Districts. Most have the goal of being State Qualifiers. It always takes some luck to reach "States", and getting a high-seed today will make that less difficult.
In the "there's always something" category, GoDaddy, the service that hosts OhioTennisZone.com had a snafu this morning. It was not possible to access OTZ. The other web sites that are offered via Gerber Analytics (i.e. PickleballZone.com) did not have similar problems. There will be more calls to GoDaddy today to figure out what happened.

It was a quiet evening as most teams wind down the season and others prepare players for Districts. Just two matches were reported. Today is an OTZ Photo Friday. The bright sun and low humidity has yielded some pretty good photos this fall. Today's featured photo is of UA's Carmen Kimmel.
There are numerous new photos from the UA Sectional. They include action and team photos. I got to the Sectional early so that I would not have to walk miles (exageration alert) for a parking spot. It also gave me an opportunity to take six team photos. The team photos are of Centennial, Hilliard Darby, Groveport Madison, Mount Vernon, Olentangy, and Westerville South.
The OTZ goal is to stay within the Columbus 270 outerbelt when taking photos. Traveling to matches seems to be more time consuming this year since most businesses have returned to pre-COVID, on-site office staffing. Since OTZ is closest to UA, Watterson, and Whetstone, they are the go-to sites for photos. This means that there will be a few more photos of these teams on OTZ. When considering the enormous number of players competing during the first day of Sectionals, it is necessary that the weather cooperates. That was (or will be) the case this season. The Northwest District plays their Sectionals today.

The Greater Columbus Tennis Association (GCTA) held its annual awards banquet last Thursday. The junior players of the year were recognized. They are Amiya Bowles, Lauren Burkett, Jackson Clements, Abhinav Dandu, Henry Lessard, Sam Lessard, and Nason Lo. Lo and Dandu's parents are included in the photo. Also familiar to Grove City tennis players are Lynn and Gary Donaldson. They were named Tennis Family of the Year. I am a long-time GCTA board member and I take photos of the event. This is the first major update of the season for the Top Ten Girls Photos. Obviously, picking the top photos is a subjective thing. The top photos normally have the following in common: good spacing of the player and ball, high quality sun, high quality competition, great eye-on-ball, good body coiling, no hats or visors that block the sun from reaching the player's eyes, good athleticism, and a subdued or pleasing background. Nothing ruins a photo more than a distracting background of cars, signs, or port-a-johns.As it has been in the past, there tends to be a great sun day that produces numerous good photos. That was the case this season when Watterson played DeSales at Wickertree. There are three in the top ten photos from this match.

The worst eleven words that a tennis photographer will hear are, "My daughter is playing doubles. Can you please take her photo?" While it is possible to get a really good action photo of a doubles player, it probably takes about 5x more time than a singles match to get one. There are multiple reasons. Players do not make as many balls. Many first serves are faults. (Boys think that the benefit of hitting one ace outweighs four doubles faults..) Partners block the sought-after player from the camera's view. It is far more difficult to get a photo of the player in the Ad court than the deuce court. There are no doubles photos in this group.

Just provide the file name of the image in a Feedback to purchase a photo. Could I provide a way for you to simply just purchase and download the image? Most teams are wrapping up their dual match schedules for the season. Many are also switching around their line-ups to reflect what their players will be competing in during Sectionals. The boys HS tennis season, adult summer pickleball season, and girls HS tennis season not only went back-to-back-to-back this year, but there was also overlap between the seasons. That led to some big backlogs as focus shifted forward to the next season with little time to catchup. The good news is that I am catching up with the photos. Just as it is done for the tennis seasons, our PickleballZone.com web site just started identifying the top photos for 2025. It is likely that central Ohio players and parents will recognize a few of these players. There are also past HS players who are competing. Today's featured photo is of Meghan Haddow who played tennis for Olentangy Liberty. Haddow now plays lacrosse for Kent State where she is a senior. Sectional Draws Online
The Sectional Draws were released yesterday for some of the Districts. All of the draws for the Central and Northwest Districts are online, and some are posted for the Southwest. It is a bit weird that some of the draws no longer include the seed numbers. Hopefully that information will be added soon. The class year has been included for all of the draws thus far so that is very nice for the college coaches who need this information. Links to the draws will be included above until the end of the season.

Mason Wins Flight A of GCTCA | Anthony Wayne Wins Lex Invite
It was a perfect day for tournaments. Mason won the Flight A group of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association Tournament (GCTCA) with Sycamore and Indian Hill tying for second. At the Lexington Invitational, Anthony Wayne finished first and Centerville was second. In Flight B of the GCTCA, St. Ursula Academy won. Today is Sectional Draw Day. Since the OHSAA is now allowing three dubs courts per team, it will be very interesting to see how many teams go with that option. It should certainly help make Sectionals go faster since two singles courts will be replaced with one doubles. Good luck!

There was a major update to the OTZ Top Players and Watch Lists today. These lists will continue to be tweaked as players compete in more matches. Players "start" on the Watch List and some will move up from there. The number of players on the Top Players List varies from year to year based on the number of high performing players competing. The *end-of-season* number over the last five years is: 2020 - 24, 2021 - 22, 2022 - 18, 2023 - 23, and 2024 - 21.
Note that high school player results are needed to make this list work. While OTZ is aware of non-HS results (in TennisRecruiting.net and UTR) , the OTZ lists are for HS tennis performance. Click to view the Top Ohio Players for Central, Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest.
OTZ members should always sign-in first when using OhioTennisZone. Members can view the results and photos of non-OTZ members and get easy access to TennisRecruiting.net data for all players. Somewhat surprisingly (at least to me), there are also OTZ action photos for all of these players.

The biggest mover on both lists is Massillon Jackson. They went from unranked to #5 in Division I. Worthington Christian was added to the D2 list. Other teams in contention in D1 were Worthington Kilbourne, Hilliard Davidson, and Perrysburg. Teams in D2 that were considered included Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and Maumee Valley Country Day.
The Rosetta Stone teams were Orange, Massillon Jackson, and Magnificat because of their extensive travel schedules.

Things were crazy-busy last fall and I punted on tennis as soon as the season was over. These are my personal favorites, and hopefully, there will be a few that you enjoyed, too. Drizzly and rainy conditions canceled matches for many schools. Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy defeated St. Joseph Academy, 3-2, in the most notable match of the evening. CVCA won 46 of the games while SJA won 36. In other 3-2 matches, Northmont defeated Carroll; Eaton beat Waynesville; Valley View defeated Wayne; and Madison Senior beat Carlisle. While attending the Delaware Hayes versus Upper Arlington-B match last night, the Medvedev / Photographer situation at the US Open was discussed. I am very familier with the Cincinnati Open, and I do not think this situation could happen in Cincinnati. The marshalls would have prevented court access by an accredited photographer or by anyone else. In the FWIW department, I was in an elevator with Medvedev when he was #1 in the world. He could not have been more courteous. An unfortunate situation for everyone...

As with everything else on OTZ, the goal is to enable high school tennis fans to quickly obtain the information they need rather than to maximize OTZ clicks and page views. For those new to this report, make sure that you are familiar with the information / tools listed in the red call-outs. For the best experience, sign-in to OTZ first.
While there is an overall downward trend on the number of participating schools in the tournament, there are three more teams this year (113) versus last (110). The Central, Northwest, and Southwest District picked up more teams. The Northeast District lost two.

As shown in the graph, Southwest and Northeast have the most participants and Central has the least. Out of the 373 OHSAA girls tennis teams, 30.3% of the teams are competing in this tournament. Please click on the graph to enlarge it for easier viewing.
This year, the Central District teams will play the Southwest teams in the first round of the State Team Tournament, while the Northeast will play the Northwest. If there are insufficient courts available for all teams to play (likely), Division I will go on court first. The tournament site has not yet been selected.

Hathaway Brown Beats Magnificat | New Albany, CSG/Jerome, and Big Walnut Win Tournaments
Yesterday was another big tournament day. Columbus School for Girls were co-champions with Dublin Jerome in CSG Dubs Tournament. New Albany won its tournament, narrowly defeating Anthony Wayne and Sycamore. Big Walnut won the Watkins Memorial Doubles Classic with Watkins coming in second.

#1 Orange starts the season at number one. They return the State Singles Finalist , Genevieve Hayden. Also returning are Ivy Berlin and Lily Guiler. They lost Sana Adi to graduation. They also picked up Melanie Statsevych, a sophomore.
#2 Gilmour Academy was listed as my #1 until about 10 minutes ago.. Northeast Ohio is going to be really strong this year.. They return their top three singles players. They include Abigail Lynch and last year's State Doubles Champions, Grier Peckham and Caroline Koch. They lost Katherine Frawley and Natalie Andelova to graduation.
#3 Hawken returns its Court 1 and 2 players. They are Dani Forte and Valeria Kislyansky. They also return Anya Simpfendorfer who played 1st dubs. They lost Bella Hsieh and Vanessa Grajzl to graduation. They pick up a 2-star freshman, Emery Grossman.
#4 Last year's State Team Tournament champion, Indian Hill, will start at number four. Returning players include Martha Thompson, Ayla Daoud, and Grace Nguyen. They lost Caroline Brown and Cassie Larsen to graduation.
#5 Hathaway Brown returns its top three singles court players: Anna Mills, Ava Kamensky, and Elizabeth Chen. They lost Sarah Cimoroni to graduation. Lucia Holiday, a 2-star freshman, will be joining HB.
#6 Columbus Academy lost four starters to graduation including Tamanna Arya, Audrey Lu, and Mary Panley. Returning for CA are Ella Tsao, Gabrielle Stewart, and Sophie Wu.
#7 Columbus School for Girls returns its main starters from last year's strong team. This include their three singles players: Priya Mehta, Victoria Dizon, and Iva Karagirova. This might just be the year that CSG beats CA.
#8 Chaminade-Julienne returns Paige Harsman, Evy Powers, and Francesca Gongora. They lost Olivia Parisi to graduation, and Ansley Vioette is now playing for Beavercreek.

Many teams started the season with tournament play yesterday. There was also one dual match reported. In tournament play, Watkins Memorial won the Reynoldsburg Doubles Tournament and Westerville Central was second. In the Delaware Hayes Invitational, Worthington Kilbourne was the champion and Marysville was the runner-up. Beavercreek won the Chaminade-Julienne Invitational, and Seven Hills was second.

Most astute readers will guess that today's team photo was taken at the Cincinnati Open. "Wow" is the best way to summarize the changes. It is difficult to comprehend how much things have changed, and that is before realizing that all of this was done in one year. I cannot imagine how coordinated the efforts had to have been to get all of this work completed. What's even better is that the Girls OHSAA tournament will be taking place there in a little more than two months. It will be very interesting to see how the OHSAA adjusts to these massive changes. HS fans will definitely need to wear comfortable walking shoes..

Mason Starts Season as #1 in Division I (beta release)
Match play begins today for the Girls 2025 Season. Weather conditions will be hot, but dry.
Last year, there were no pre-season team ranking predictions because of the Findlay farm time crunch, but the rankings are back this year. Today, the Division I teams are ranked. The Division II rankings will be posted on Sunday. Mason is a clear favorite. Anthony Wayne is a clear #2.

Division I
#1 Mason is the defending Division I champion. They also return the State champions for Singles (Addison Cassidy) and Doubles (Pratyusha Chaudhuri and Emma Wagner). So yeah, they are going to be pretty good.. In addition to those three, Mason returns Adriana Moreno and Saanvi Reddy. Incoming freshman players for the Comets include: Megha Soundar (3-star) and Evia Hu (2-star).
#2 Anthony Wayne looks really solid with their three returning singles players. They are Mara Boyd, Jillian To, and Cora Langenderfer. They lost Emily Szul and Mallory Rettig to graduation.
#3 Sycamore loses just one starter from last year's strong team. They return their top three singles players. They are Lisa Kai, Serena Sayles, and Allison Sayles. Sycamore also picks up a 2-star freshman, Claire Shiveley.
#4 Last year's Central District champion, Upper Arlington will start at number four. Returning players include Alexa Roth, Kylie Husted, and Danielle Ball. They lost their second singles player, Alice Hawley, to graduation. Another graduate, Ava Kramer, played #1 dubs.
#5 New Albany lost two key players from graduation, Airi Clements and Sophia Bojko. Returning for NA are Valentina Suslova, Reava Desai, and Nayana Thakkar. Erin Thomas is NA's new head coach this season.
#6 Magnificat is rebuilding with strong players. They lost their State singles #3 finisher, Anna Mancino, to Cleveland State's squad. They return Margaret Williams, Marissa Packer, and Maggie Steen. Mag picks up two 2-stars, Elizabeth Ammori and Adriana Guillermo. Another major contributor, Corinne Daniels, also graduated.
#7 Oak Hill is a new, but deserving name in the rankings. They return last year's strong team of Renee Harper, Brooke Lint, and Audrey Schnorbus. They pick up a sister, Paige Lint, who is a strong 3-star.
#8 North Canton Hoover returns two, long-time, key contributors, Addison Sheil and Ema Papcke. Also back is Maria Wadley. They lost Sarah McHolm and Baleigh Crumbley to graduation.
#9 Centerville returns Elise Hedrick, Noelle Abend, and Emma Morr, but they lost five starting players. Their graduates included Eve Alappatt, Sasha Riley, and Hazel Rindler,
#10 Worthington Kilbourne is another new name in the rankings. Kilbourne is a central Ohio team. Tyra Butler returns along with Julia Carpenco. They also pick up a 2-star sophomore, Addison Bennington.
Other perennially good teams include: Solon, Notre Dame Academy, Massillon Jackson, Perrysburg, and Highland.

Some of these freshman players will make immediate contributions to their teams, but high school tennis presents unique challenges for newcomers. They'll encounter seasoned upperclassmen, contend with unpredictable weather, and adjust to coaching styles that differ from those of their private tennis instructors. Moreover, as these young athletes continue to grow, growth spurts can temporarily disrupt the finesse of their strokes and footwork, adding an element of clumsiness to their game.
The top two incoming players competing in high school this year will be Turpin's Makayla Malone and Laurel's Sophia Nguyen-Huynh. Nguyen-Huynh has played in an eye-popping 116 USTA matches during the past year.
This alphabetized list should be solid, but please let OTZ know if it is missing players who are currently listed as eighth graders or who are coming in from other states. This list may also include a player or two who are currently sophomores.
The Tennis Recruiting.net star ratings are included beside each of the players. The player links go to Tennis Recruiting.net.
Of the 24 players on the list, the Central District has only one (three in 2025, five in 2024, and seven in 2023), Northeast - 13 (eight in 2025, seven in 2024, and six in 2023), Northwest - two (one in 2025, one in 2024, and zero in 2023), and Southwest - 8 (12 in 2025, and ten in 2024 and 2023.

OTZ will soon post its Pre-Season Top 10 Team lists after it is clear where players are going to attend school and which girls are playing high school tennis.
It is highly encouraged that the OTZ Top 10 teams become OTZ Team Members. OhioTennisZone provides the teams in the Top 10 with a great deal of recognition and coverage. This recognition is very helpful to teams because many middle school kids follow OTZ and they want to be a part of a program which has a winning tradition. It is a complete no-brainer for private schools to be team members because attracting strong tennis players also means more tuition dollars for the school, but it also makes sense for public schools, too. (A private school who does not get a Team Membership may mean that it does not have a good math program..) Consider an OTZ Team Membership as the cheapest and most effective advertisement that you can buy, plus it is focused on the absolute perfect audience for your program. There are numerous Ohio high school players competing in the Girls USTA National Championships. They are Bexley's Amiya Bowles, Indian Hill's Martha Thompson, Mason's Addison Cassidy, Orange's Genevieve Hayden, and Olentangy Berlin's Soleil Cordell. There are also several players who are alternates.
Note that graduates are still included on rosters. Many fans like to see which players have graduated. Graduates are "bolded" on the rosters. Note to coaches - OTZ will remove the graduates as match play begins. It is unnecessary for coaches to remove them.

The plans were to release these rankings soon after the boys season, but with the boys season ending a week later than normal, it conflicted with the start of our summer pickleball league. Of course, the girls season is now conflicting with the end of the pickleball season..
Yes, these ranking lists are a bit cluttered, but they quickly show which teams participated in the Final Four (in red) and the number of "State Spots" (in gray) that teams earned. Hopefully this additional information will jog a few memories in the coming years.

A few photo orders are coming in and those are greatly appreciated. OTZ provides high-resolution images that players and parents can use digitially. A couple of players mentioned that they planned to post them Instagram. Of course, there are also no shipping costs associated with digital images.
OTZ will identify the 10-12 that are the favorites in a few days.
The photos that are available to be purchased are included on SmugMug. They are sorted newest to oldest by event. To get started, just provide the filenames via a Feedback message. Yes, they make great Father's Day presents, too..

OHSAA Tournament Championship Points
Four out of four of the championship points were captured this year. It was close though. D2 dubs finished about 45 seconds before the D2 singles match point was played.
Player photos are included at the end of the videos. There was also an extra point added when possible.
For best results, use full screen mode and increase the resolution to HD (for high definition).
Crank up the volume so that co-workers (or neighbors) stop by your office cube to see what is going on.

There are always some scoring snafus found by coaches as they begin to print off their end-of-season reports. If results are incorrect, please provide:
- the *incorrect* match information. The error first needs to be located in the database and there are a zillion scores. Please include the date, the name(s) of all of the player(s) and their schools, and the score.
- then provide the correct match information which includes all of the above, but with the correct information
If the commentary is incorrect, please provide *when* the commentary was in error, the erroneous comments, and what it should be. Screen shots are always helpful.
Please keep in mind there are quite a few moving parts. The players could have reported the wrong score, the coach could have recorded it incorrectly, the newspaper may have posted it incorrectly, or maybe, just possibly, OTZ could have made an error.

For those of you unaware of this, Dublin Coffman Coach Brett Hundertpfund's wife, Chelsey, is ill with a rare form of cancer. There are not good treatment options for her. She and Brett must travel to hopefully find something that will be effective. It is also uncertain what insurance will pay for (if anything). Mason and Orange are the State Team Championships
Congratulations to Mason, the Division I team champion, and to the Division II champion, Orange. Mason defeated New Albany and University School to get the championship. Orange beat Lexington and Indian Hill. To view all of the results recorded from yesterday, click on Previous Day's Match Results.

On the excitement meter, this State Team Tournament was rated "pretty good". The Mason versus New Albany had a 3-2 result and so did the Indian Hill versus Columbus Academy match. It seemed that Columbus Academy used up their emotional energy on Saturday and Indian Hill used theirs on their big win over Columbus Academy. All of the other matches were 3-0's, except for the University School versus St. Johns Jesuit match. The weather was as wacky yesterday as it has been all season. There were no wind-chill numbers reported, but many parents were seen returning to their cars for extra layers. It was a long day that finished at 6:00pm.
Most of the singles matches involving the top players went unfinished. The exceptions were: Mason's Greg Bernadsky defeated New Albany's Jackson Clements and University School's Vishwum Kapadia; Orange's Illia Shcherbakov beat Indian Hill's Neelan Gandhi; Indian Hill's Neelan Gandhi defeated Columbus Academy's Nason Lo; and Indian Hill's Gareth Kurowski beat Columbus Academy's Lucas Xue. Mason was about to win the prestigious "Holding the OTCA Banner the Levelist" award, but they were abruptly disqualified when they let the banner touch the ground. Even though this near-crime is not eligible to be reviewed by video, the picture above confirmed it. Sorry.
Normally parents charge the boys like a swarm of overcharged drones for team photos, but they did not do so this season. [This is a brand new analogy at no extra charge.]
While there are no guarantees, Mason will be favored to win again next year. They lose just one starter to graduation. Orange lost a ton of great seniors last year but they obviously reloaded quickly. Most of their starters return.

Congratulations to the State Champions
Congratulations to all of the players who competed yesterday and especially to the State Champions. Yes, it rained again, but there was good progress made outside before heading indoors at noon. The championship matches were completed by 2.20, but the 3rd/4th contests continued. Aspen Racquet Club was a great host.

The State Team Tournament takes place today at the College of Wooster at 9:30am. (Per OTCA's Mike Teets, it is delayed by one hour.) If it rains, Division I will play at Aspen Racquet Club, and Division II will go to Lakewood Racquet Club in Lexington. The start times vary if play goes indoors. The safest course of action is to reach out to your coach if there is uncertainty.
The OTZ Top Picks for States video came out pretty solid. The entire field does not need to be seeded to make this a better tournament. Just make sure that the top singles players and doubles teams do not collide until the second day. Thankfully the temperatures were cool; otherwise, the results may have been different.

Ready for Day 2 of States
It's time up the ante on the video. Let's go with this happy little one today. Things went pretty well yesterday considering the one hour rain delay. Play wrapped up at roughly 6pm with CA's dubs team beating Lex's, 6-4, 6-4.
There were clearly several matches that should have taken place today rather than yesterday. It was clear that this was going to happen after the draws were released. This happened in Division I and Division II. In D2, there cannot be a draw with six #1 seeds where all of the #1 seeds are treated as #1 seeds. That's obvious. And no, it's not as simple as simply using a bunch of UTR, TRN, or WTN ratings. These are; however, good tools to use in the analysis along with head-to-head comparisons within high school competition. Let's fix this before the girls season.

It is time for another OhioTennisZone video. This video recognizes the players who are OTZ's top picks for States. The video uses a combination of OTZ action photos and videos that were taken over the last two years. Hope you find it to be interesting and informative. This will also help match a name with a face for those who attend States.

Time frames are always super tight in creating these videos. This video was hammered out last night and early this morning. I doubt that I ever will, but I would like to get to a 95% ok video level. This one is probably about 85-90%. It is really hard to become proficient in something that is done just twice a year, but I will keep trying. I did create my own teleprompter to make the task easier by using a music stand, a picture frame, and strategically placed gaffer's tape. Thankfully, we do not live in an earthquake zone..

It is fun to review older videos. Here are a few from both prior girls and boys seasons. Click for Girls 2020, Boys 2021, Girls 2021, Boys 2022, Girls 2022, Boys 2023, Girls 2023, Boys 2024, and Girls 2024. Hopefully you will agree that the production quality has improved at least slightly over the years. At one point, I created "hype" videos for States that included action photos of the players in the State Tournament and the State Team Tournament, but Google eventually prevented professional music from being used. That eliminated my interest. Perhaps with AI generated music, this will be possible again in the future. Here is one from Girls 2019. (It includes Daniel Tonkal's sister.) Tennis fans will recognize a few of these high school players.

Prep Work for States
Work is underway at OTZ to get ready for States. There are still quite a few players without profile photos for the State Draws. If players, parents, or coaches see that a player does not have a photo, please forward one to OTZ.

There are two items to note for States photos. Taking photos during Girls States was a challenge because most photographers were limited to the area behind the courts. That restriction has been lifted, and photographers are now able to be court side.
The second. The OHSAA has an exclusive on selling photos from States. The exception to this is that bona fide newspapers, as determined by the OHSAA, are permitted to do so. This is expected to change for Girls States, but no OTZ photos are available for sale for Boys States. There are no restrictions for OTZ, or for other entities, to sell photos during the rest of the season, including the State Team Tournament.
